The user manual admin/password default combo didn't work... but the following did for my rdn4000.

For v4 firmware use:

username: admin
password: netgear1

Enabling ssh

# Download: http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/4.00/EnableRootSSH_1.0.bin
# Go in the ReadyNAS FrontView with your browser and go to System -> Update -> Local Update
# Upload the EnableRootSSH binary file. The ReadyNAS verifies that content and if it is correct it displays a description of the addon.
# Acknowledge the installation of the addon

enabling ssh for user accounts

By default, user accounts on the readynas cannot login via ssh. To enable, edit /etc/passwd and set the default shell from /bin/false to /bin/bash.
