KDE refuses to start programs

kde version: 4.14.3
KDE refuses to start programs at some point after login. Logging off and on again will temporarily resolve the issue, but it comes back quickly.
errors when starting programs from konsole:
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyxhost: unable to open display ":0"
root cause i think was the dhcp server setting my hostname via an old /etc/hosts file on the dns server.
solution
I corrected the hosts file on the dns server and ran...
sudo hostname localhost
I was able to lauch programs again without restarting or logging off from KDE.
